The US-Algeria trade relationship is dynamic and each year the trade volume between the two countries increases. In its position as the twelfth largest company in the world, Sonatrach (the National Oil Company of Algeria) continues to be the prominent partner for US energy companies operating in Algeria.

The announcement of new discoveries and the introduction of new energy companies into the Algerian market has highlighted Algeria’s strategic position as a key supplier in the world energy market. Algeria is currently the world ninth largest producer of oil and the world’s third largest producer of natural gas. Additionally, Algeria is one of the few oil-rich countries that has answered the world’s call for a greater utilization of renewable energy sources through its substantial use of renewable energy.

2009 US-ALGERIA ENERGY FORUM

Introducing New Trends in US-Algeria Energy Trade:
Renewable Energy Sources and Innovative Technologies
Washington, DC

On February 17, 2009 the US-Algeria Business Council and the Embassy of Algeria in Washington DC hosted the annual US-Algeria Energy Forum featuring the Honorable Minister Chakib Khelil, the Algerian Minister of Energy & Mines and the Honorable Ambassador Abdallah Baali, the Algerian Ambassador to the United States. The 2009 US-Algeria Energy Forum was generously sponsored by the following USABC Members: BP, ExxonMobil, Nabors Industries, Anadarko, McMoran Exploration Co., ConocoPhillips, Curtis International Lawyers and Northrop Grumman.

Over 100 people attended the energy forum to hear the comments from Minister Khelil and experts from the US Department of Energy, the Algerian Ministry of Energy & Mines, the Center for Research and Development of Gas in Algeria, New Energy Algeria, BP Alternative Energy, the Algerian Energy Efficiency Agency and GE Energy.

The theme of this year’s conference introduced a new topic in the ongoing dialogue of US-Algeria trade relations; the 2009 Us-Algeria Energy Forum focused on the role of renewable energy in US-Algeria energy trade. Algeria has recently launched a government-backed initiative to develop the sources of renewable energies in the country, namely wind power, water power and solar power. In a recent feasibility study it was found that Algeria’s solar energy output would be substantial enough to match all of Europe’s energy needs. The forward-thinking approach of the Algerian Government is to utilize oil revenues to jumpstart a sustainable renewable energy market.

The 2009 US-Algeria Renewable Energy Forum was an opportunity for US companies to learn about investment opportunities in the renewable energy field in Algeria and for government officials to expand their familiarity with the important contribution renewable energy can make in avoiding energy crises in the future.
