On December 1-2, 2010, the US-Algeria Business Council and the US Department of State organized the 2010 US-Maghreb Entrepreneurship Conference in Algiers, Algeria. This conference was the first of its kind in the region and featured the voices of numerous young entrepreneurs, globally recognized business leaders and experts, key government officials and international press figures. Participants came from Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, the United State and Tunisia, as well as the European Union and the Middle East. Far from being an isolated event, this conference was the first official follow-on conference to the 2010 Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship hosted by H.E. President Barak Obama in Washington, DC, and the first of many ongoing US-Maghreb Entrepreneurship Conferences to be held annually.
The keynote address at this conference was presented by the Algerian Minister of Industry, Investment and SMEs, H.E. Minister Mohamed Benmeradi and US Assistant Secretary of State Mr. Jose W. Fernandez, with a very warm welcome from the Chairman of the US-Algeria Business Council, Mr. Paul Mikolashek and the US Ambassador to Algeria, H.E. Ambassador David Pearce.
With a packed schedule and packed house, the 300+ participants discussed opportunities as well as barriers to entrepreneurship in the region. Success stories were presented, new frameworks for finance in the region were explored and new regional and global solutions were crafted in the crowded hallways of this exciting event. New partnerships were developed and plans for more regional coordination through business opportunities were solidified. Several of the guests present at the event had never been to Algeria and were astounded by the numerous opportunities in this beautiful nation.
One of the greatest outcomes of this important conference was the many new partnerships born out of the trans-Maghreb networking between young entrepreneurs. The US-Algeria Business Council is hopeful that at the next round of the US-Maghreb Entrepreneurship Conference, many new trans-Maghreb success stories will be announced.
Both in the organization of the 2010 US-Maghreb Entrepreneurship Conference and in our activities throughout the year, the US-Algeria Business Council has greatly benefited from the ongoing support of its two honorary Presidents, H.E. Ambassador Abdallah Baali, and H.E. Ambassador David Pearce. Both ambassadors work tirelessly to ensure that the United States and Algeria expand and enhance their relationship. On behalf of the members of the US-Algeria Business Council, we celebrate their leadership and the new opportunities for partnership and trade between the new countries.
The US-Algeria Business Council is a non-profit, independently funded business association composed of nearly 100 Algerian and US members. The mission of the US-Algeria Business Council is to expand and diversify US-Algeria trade while representing the interest of our members as a whole. Through the year the USABC hosts events featuring key figures in US-Algeria trade and organizes sector-specific trade missions. Companies operating in US-Algeria trade are encouraged to contact and join the US-Algeria Business Council and benefit from its outstanding network of members and partners.
