On September 20-24, 2011, the US-Algeria Business Council and the Embassy of Algeria in Washington, DC hosted the 2011 US-Algeria Innovative Pharmaceutical Study Tour to Boston, Massachusetts and Washington, DC.  The delegation from Algeria was lead by H.E. Minister Djamel Ould Abbes and was composed of thirty officials from the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Labor, the Ministry of Higher Education, public and private pharmaceutical companies, research centers and regulatory agencies. This unprecedented study tour was composed of technical visits to laboratories and universities, including the prestigious Northeastern University of Boston, MA, and meetings with leading decision makers from international pharmaceutical companies and public institutions and regulatory agencies.

One of the highlights of the four day mission was the meeting between US Secretary of Health, the Honorable Kathleen Sebelius and H.E. Minister Djamel Ould Abbes at the US Department of Health & Human Services.  This important meeting was the first of its kind between an active Minister of Health and a US Secretary of Health and Human Services.  The 2011 Innovative Pharmaceutical Study Tour has ushered in a transparent and productive dialogue in the key public and private decision makers in the Algerian pharmaceutical market.

The 2011 US-Algeria Pharmaceutical Study Tour was the follow-up activity from the US-Algeria pharmaceutical initiative recently launched in Algeria. During the 2011 US-Algeria Health Forum & Expo on June 8-9, 2011 in Algiers, Algeria, key players from the international pharmaceutical industry joined together to invite H.E. Minister Djamel Ould Abbes, the Algerian Minister of Health, to come to the United States with key officials for a technical study tour.
